What happened
Result: Passed at the May 7, 2019 annual meeting with 89,129,403 votes for, 12,271,605 against, 2,054,540 abstaining and 8,631,698 broker non-votes, which the filers reported as 88 percent support. GEO's board had opposed the resolution and then reversed course, telling the SEC its position had evolved.
GEO published the report, titled Respect for Our Inmates and Detainees, in September 2019, but the filing investors wrote to the company saying it fell far short of expectations and failed to meet current standards for human rights policies and processes. They said GEO declined repeated offers to meet and comment during its preparation, and that GEO's policies are not aligned with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
